Ask every company to quote the same written scope: a Manual J load calculation for your house, the matched model numbers, the duct work and the permit.

ACCA says a Manual J load calculation is required by national building codes and most local jurisdictions. Without one, three prices describe three different jobs.

What moves the price

What sets the price of a new HVAC system?

Eight lines set it. We do not publish a national average, because equipment, labor and duct condition vary too much for one to mean anything where you live.

  1. CapacitySized from a load calculation. Bigger is not better — oversized equipment short-cycles and dehumidifies poorly.
  2. Efficiency tierSingle-stage, two-stage or variable-capacity, and the SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings that come with each.
  3. System typeStraight cooling with a furnace, a heat pump, dual fuel or ductless — different equipment counts and different labor.
  4. DuctworkRepair, resizing, sealing or replacement. The most common line separating a cheap quote from a thorough one.
  5. Electrical workCircuit capacity, disconnects and, for some heat pump conversions, panel capacity.
  6. Refrigerant and line setWhether the existing line set can be reused, and which refrigerant the new equipment uses.
  7. Access and placementAttic, crawl space, closet or basement. Where the equipment lives sets how long it takes to get it there.
  8. Permit and commissioningPermit, inspection, and the time to actually verify charge and airflow rather than assume them.

Is there still a federal tax credit for a heat pump?

No. The §25C credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Public Law 119-21, enacted July 4, 2025, ended it. For an install completed in 2026, the federal tax credit is $0. Many sales sheets still count it, so check any quote that does.

What happens after I submit an HVAC inquiry?

A person at HyreHVAC reads the project, the zip code and your notes, then replies. Contractor matching is still being built, so this is not an instant dispatch line. Where we can, we tell you about HVAC companies serving your area. Your details are never sold, and no contractor gets them unless you agree.

Is there a charge to request HVAC quotes?

No. The form is free and does not commit you to a contractor, a brand or a start date. You decide whether to talk to anyone and whether to hire.

How long does an HVAC system last?

The median life of central air conditioning is 18.2 years in our survival fits on EIA RECS 2020 data. Sizing and maintenance move it more than brand does, and an oversized system that short-cycles wears out sooner. Age alone should not condemn a working system. It should change how you weigh a large repair.

Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?

Weigh what failed against the life left. A capacitor, contactor or control board is a routine repair at any age. A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator coil on older equipment is where replacement starts to win, especially on R-410A, which costs more to recharge as supply tightens.

What is SEER2, and why is it lower than SEER?

SEER2 is the cooling efficiency rating used since January 1, 2023. The DOE test now uses higher external static pressure, closer to real duct work, so the same equipment scores lower than it did on SEER. Never compare a SEER number with a SEER2 number.

Do heat pumps work in cold climates?

Yes. ENERGY STAR's cold-climate tier requires a heat pump to keep 70% of the 47°F heating capacity at 5°F. Whether one suits your house depends on your design temperature, your electricity and gas prices, and your backup heat. Dual-fuel systems switch to gas where gas becomes cheaper to run.

How much does a new HVAC system cost?

No national number is worth acting on, so we do not publish one. Capacity, efficiency tier, system type, duct work, electrical work, line set, access and permit set the price. Duct work varies most between bids, so one lump-sum price cannot be compared with another.

Is a bigger HVAC system better?

No. An oversized air conditioner cools the house fast and shuts off before it removes much moisture, so rooms feel cold and clammy. It also short-cycles, which wears parts. The right size comes from a Manual J load calculation, not from matching the old unit.

Do I need a permit to replace HVAC equipment?

Yes, in most places, and the contractor should pull it. Permitted work gets inspected, which is a second check on the install. Unpermitted equipment can cause trouble with warranty claims and at resale. A contractor who suggests skipping the permit is telling you something.

Is the federal HVAC tax credit still available?

No. The §25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, under Public Law 119-21. For an install completed in 2026 the federal tax credit is $0. Utility and state rebates are separate and may still apply.
