Quick answer

CFM, or cubic feet per minute, is the unit HVAC uses for airflow: the volume of air, in cubic feet, that a blower, duct, register or fan moves each minute.

It shows up everywhere: blower tables, room airflow in duct design, ventilation rates, and the cfm25 and cfm50 numbers from duct and house leakage tests.

Key takeaways

  • CFM measures how much air moves, not how hard it is pushed.
  • Each ton of cooling needs a set airflow range; one maker sets a floor of 300 CFM per ton 2.
  • Blower airflow falls as static pressure rises 1.
  • Each room gets a share of total CFM in proportion to its load 3.
  • cfm25 and cfm50 are leakage-test numbers, not delivery airflow.

What CFM measures

A cubic foot is a box one foot on each side. CFM counts how many of those boxes of air pass a point each minute. A blower rated 1,000 CFM moves enough air every minute to fill a room 10 by 10 by 10 feet.

CFM is volume, not speed. Air speed in a duct is measured in feet per minute (FPM). The two are linked by duct size: the same CFM moves faster through a small duct than a big one. That is why Manual D checks speed after sizing for CFM 3.

CFM is also not pressure. The blower makes pressure, and the ducts resist it. That resistance, static pressure, decides how many CFM the blower can deliver 1.

Where CFM is set and checked

  1. Manual J room loads → Manual S picks equipment → target blower CFM
  2. Blower speed tap + static pressure → actual CFM (blower table)
  3. Trunk and branch ducts split the CFM → room CFM at each register
  4. Return grilles bring the same CFM back
  5. Separately: ventilation fans add fresh-air CFM; leakage tests measure lost CFM

How airflow and capacity are linked

Air carries heat. The more air crosses a coil, the more heat it can pick up or drop off. For sensible heat in standard air, HVAC math uses BTU/h = 1.08 × CFM × temperature change.

The 1.08 comes from air density (about 0.075 lb per cubic foot) × 60 minutes × the specific heat of air (0.24 BTU per lb per °F).

Too little CFM and the coil gets too cold and can freeze. One Goodman manual says never run below 300 CFM per ton or evaporator freezing and poor performance are possible 2. Too much CFM and the coil does not dry the air as well.

In heating, too little CFM makes a furnace run hot. Its temperature rise climbs, and the limit switch may shut the burners off.

Note the scale: ventilation is about a tenth of the blower airflow. They are different jobs. The blower recirculates indoor air; ventilation swaps a small stream of it for outdoor air.

Where you see CFM

  • In blower tables on furnace and air handler spec sheets 1.
  • On bath and kitchen fans, as rated exhaust CFM.
  • On ERV and HRV spec sheets as fresh-air CFM.
  • On duct leakage test reports as cfm25, and blower door reports as cfm50.
  • On air purifiers as clean air delivery rate, a related CFM figure.

Getting airflow right

What it does well

  • Right CFM lets the coil hit its rated capacity and dry the air.
  • Right room CFM keeps temperatures even.
  • Right ventilation CFM controls moisture and indoor pollutants.

Where it falls short

  • Too high: noise, drafts, weaker dehumidification.
  • Too low: frozen coils, hot furnaces, rooms short of air.
  • Real CFM is hard to measure without the right tools.

Limits of CFM numbers

A rated CFM is only true at the static pressure it is listed at. The same Goodman tap moves 1,087 CFM at 0.1 inch and 841 CFM at 0.8 inch 1. Ask at what pressure a figure applies.

Room CFM at the register can also differ from what the duct design says, because of leaks, kinks and dampers. Measuring it takes a flow hood or similar tool.

And CFM leaked through ducts is lost to the house; ENERGY STAR estimates about 20 to 30 percent of duct airflow is lost in typical systems 6.

How airflow affects cost

Low airflow costs money in quiet ways. Capacity falls, the system runs longer, and blower watts rise as static climbs 1. Fixing airflow is often cheaper than buying a bigger unit.

Fixes range from a new filter to added returns or bigger branches. See ductwork services and the repair cost calculator.

How a technician checks airflow

  1. Measure total external static pressure 2.
  2. Read the blower table at that pressure and speed tap 1.
  3. Compare with the target CFM per ton for the equipment.
  4. Optionally measure room CFM at registers with a flow hood.
  5. Change the speed tap or fix duct restrictions; re-measure.

Three ways to estimate airflow in the field

Static pressure and blower table. Measure total external static pressure, then read the blower table for the speed tap in use 2 1. Quick, and good enough for most service calls.

Temperature rise on a furnace. Airflow ≈ furnace output ÷ (1.08 × temperature rise). The GR9S80 0603A puts out 48,000 BTU/h on natural gas and lists a rise range of 20°F to 50°F 1.

At a measured 45°F rise, airflow is about 48,000 ÷ (1.08 × 45), or roughly 990 CFM. A rise above the listed range points to low airflow.

Flow hood at each register. A hood over the register reads room CFM directly. It is the only one of the three that shows which room is short.

Keeping airflow up

  • Change filters on time.
  • Keep vents and returns open and unblocked.
  • Keep the indoor coil and blower wheel clean.
  • Do not add a much denser filter without checking pressure; see MERV ratings.

Signs of low airflow

  • Weak air at registers.
  • Ice on the indoor coil or suction line.
  • Furnace short-cycling on the limit switch.
  • Rooms far from the unit never comfortable.
  • Whistling at the filter or return grille.
  • Call a pro for airflow and refrigerant checks; refrigerant work needs EPA 608 certification.

Standards that set CFM

Ventilation. ASHRAE 62.2 sets whole-dwelling ventilation at Qtot = 0.03 × floor area + 7.5 × (bedrooms + 1) cfm, with an infiltration credit allowed when a blower door test has been done 4. Codes adopt it in various forms.

Duct leakage. The 2021 IECC, as adopted in Sanger, Texas, caps duct leakage at 4 cfm25 per 100 sq ft of conditioned floor area 5.

Design. Manual D splits blower CFM among rooms by load and checks velocity limits 3.

Common misconceptions

Myth More CFM is always better.
Reality Too much air weakens dehumidification and adds noise.
Myth Rated CFM is what you get.
Reality Only at the listed static pressure 1.
Myth Ventilation CFM is the same as blower CFM.
Reality Blower CFM recirculates; ventilation brings in outdoor air.

Humidity and airflow targets

Installers often slow airflow per ton in humid places such as Florida and Georgia so the coil runs colder and pulls more moisture, while drier places such as Arizona can use higher airflow for more sensible capacity. The maker's floor still applies; one Goodman manual says never below 300 CFM per ton 2.

When CFM matters to you

CFM matters when a room is never comfortable, when the coil freezes, or when you change filters or equipment. Ask what airflow the system delivers, at what static pressure.

Next step: check duct sizes with the duct sizing calculator.

Questions about CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute)

What does CFM mean in HVAC?

CFM means cubic feet per minute. It is the volume of air a blower, duct, register or fan moves each minute. HVAC uses it for system airflow, room airflow, ventilation rates and leakage test results.

How many CFM per ton does an AC need?

It depends on the equipment and climate, so follow the maker's data. One current Goodman installation manual says never run below 300 CFM per ton, because the coil can freeze and performance suffers.

How do I calculate CFM for a room?

Manual D gives each room a share of the blower airflow in proportion to its load: blower CFM times room load divided by total load. Designers calculate both heating and cooling values and use the larger.

How does static pressure change CFM?

Higher static pressure means less airflow at the same blower setting. On one Goodman furnace speed tap, airflow is 1,087 CFM at 0.1 inch, 938 CFM at 0.5 inch and 841 CFM at 0.8 inch.

How much ventilation CFM does a house need?

ASHRAE 62.2 sets 0.03 cfm per square foot plus 7.5 cfm per occupant, counted as bedrooms plus one. A 2,000 square foot, three-bedroom home works out to 90 cfm, before any infiltration credit.

What is cfm25?

It is the airflow, in CFM, that leaks from a duct system when it is pressurized to 25 pascals in a duct leakage test. Codes often express limits as cfm25 per 100 square feet of floor area.

What is cfm50?

It is the airflow through a house's leaks when a blower door holds it at 50 pascals. Multiplying cfm50 by 60 and dividing by house volume gives ACH50, the air changes per hour at 50 pascals.

Can too much airflow be a problem?

Yes. Air moving too fast across a cooling coil removes less moisture, so rooms can feel cool but damp. High airflow through small ducts and grilles also makes noise.

How is CFM related to air changes per hour?

Air changes per hour equal CFM times 60, divided by the volume of the space in cubic feet. A 90 cfm ventilation fan in a 16,000 cubic foot house supplies about 0.34 air changes per hour of outdoor air.

Why does my furnace need more airflow when I add AC?

Cooling usually needs more air than heating, so the blower must be able to deliver the cooling CFM at your duct static pressure. Furnace data sheets list the largest AC each model can carry, often at 0.5 inch of static pressure.
