Heat pump installation for your climate

A heat pump is sized and set up for winter, not summer. That is the part many quotes skip.

The short version

Heat pump installation should be planned around your heating load at your coldest design temperature, not just cooling. That decides the size, whether you need a cold-climate model, how backup heat is set, and where the outdoor unit sits so defrost water drains away safely.

Safety first: refrigerant and line voltage

Two parts of this job are regulated or dangerous, so they come first.

Refrigerant work needs EPA Section 608 certification

EPA counts even attaching hoses and gauges to measure pressure as work that needs a certified technician.

The outdoor unit runs on line voltage

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave panels and wiring to a licensed contractor.

What a correct heat pump installation includes

These are the winter-specific items.

A heating load at design temperature

Manual J gives heating and cooling loads. The unit should meet the heating load or be paired with planned backup heat.

Capacity at low temperature checked

Rated capacity drops as it gets colder. See cold-climate performance.

Backup heat set to come on only when needed

Thermostat lockouts stop electric strips running when the heat pump could cope. See balance point.

Outdoor unit raised and drained

Defrost melts frost into water. The unit sits above snow, away from walkways where that water can freeze.

Charge and airflow measured in heating and cooling

DOE found charge faults in 29-78% of systems in field studies.

Is a heat pump a good fit for your house?

Most houses can use one. The questions are your winter low, your insulation, and whether ducts can carry the airflow. If you are unsure, the heat pump readiness index and the heat pump vs furnace tool help frame it.

Rebates change often and vary by state; see heat pump rebates. The federal 25C credit ended on December 31, 2025.

Red flags in an installation quote

Any one of these is a reason to ask more questions or get another quote.

Sized from the old unit or square footage alone

No room-by-room load calculation means the size is a guess.

No permit mentioned

Most jurisdictions require a mechanical permit and inspection for new equipment. Ask who pulls it.

Model numbers missing

A quote that says "16 SEER system" without model numbers cannot be checked against the AHRI directory.

Sized to the old AC

An AC was sized for summer. A heat pump has to carry winter.

What drives the price of heat pump installation

HyreHVAC does not publish a price for heat pump installation. We do not yet hold enough sourced, dated quotes to give a figure we can stand behind.

Drivers include capacity, cold-climate rating, ducted or ductless, electrical work and whether backup heat is new or kept.

Our HVAC cost guides explain each driver, and the heat pump savings calculator lets you work through your own numbers.

What happens after you ask

You fill in the HVAC options form with the job and your zip code. HyreHVAC is a publisher, not a contractor, and contractor matching is still being built. Until it is, treat the form as an inquiry. Keep getting your own written quotes and check each installer’s licence with your state board.

Tell us about the work

Three short steps: the job, your home, and how to reach you. Nothing goes to an HVAC company unless you agree.

A person reads it and replies, free and with no obligation. Matching is not live yet, so this is not a quote. If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility first.

A person at HyreHVAC reads the request and replies. Matching with contractors is not live yet, so this is not a quote.

We reply to every inquiry. Nothing is passed on to anyone you have not asked us to contact.

Questions

Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
Cold-climate models are built to keep more of their capacity at low temperatures. Ask for the maker’s capacity at your design temperature, not just the rating.
Do I still need backup heat?
Many homes keep some, either electric strips or an existing furnace. It should be set to run only below the balance point.
Why does my outdoor unit steam in winter?
That is defrost, a normal cycle. See defrost cycle.
Is the federal tax credit still available?
No. The 25C credit expired on December 31, 2025. State and utility programs may still apply.

HYRE HVAC Research Desk

Primary-source research, data analysis and fact checking

We are a research desk, not a sales floor. We read the federal microdata file, the statute or the manufacturer data sheet ourselves, and we publish the figure with the document it came from and the date we retrieved it.

Where a number cannot be traced to a primary source, we publish the shorter page and say what we could not verify.

The counts below are generated from the published pages themselves, last counted October 26, 2026, and they are what we have actually published rather than what we intend to.

18
studies published
15
federal sources read and cited
15
studies published with their full dataset as CSV
51
jurisdictions reproduced against EIA’s own tables

How this desk works

  • Primary sources only. Federal data comes from the agency that collects it, in the file that agency publishes. We do not cite an article that cites a source; we download the source and compute the figure ourselves.
  • We validate against the agency before we publish. First, we use each federal microdata file to reproduce the agency’s own published tables. Our cooling research reproduces EIA’s state estimates and standard errors for all 51 jurisdictions. That check caught a variance formula that was off by a factor of four.
  • Every estimate carries its uncertainty. These are survey figures, not counts. Standard errors are computed from the replicate weights the federal file supplies and printed beside the estimate. An estimate too imprecise to publish is reported as such rather than printed.
  • Nothing is typed by hand. Prose, tables and charts all read from one dataset built by script, so a number in a sentence and the same number in the table below it cannot disagree.
  • We publish the data, not just the conclusion. 15 of our 18 studies offer the full computed table as a CSV download on the page, so you can check the analysis or disagree with it. A study without a row-level dataset gets no download link and claims none in its structured data.
  • We correct in public. Where we have published a figure wrongly we fix the figure, rewrite any analysis that rested on it rather than patching the number underneath it, and leave a dated correction note on the page.
  • We do not install or sell HVAC equipment, and we take no payment for placement, ranking or a favorable mention. Nobody buys a position on this site.
