Air conditioner fan not spinning

The outdoor fan carries heat away from the coil. Without it, the compressor overheats.

The short answer

An air conditioner fan not spinning, with the outdoor unit humming, most often has a failed run capacitor, a failed fan motor, a stuck contactor or debris jamming the blade. Switch the system off at the thermostat: running the compressor without the fan overheats it.

Check the breaker and look for obvious debris from outside the grille. The capacitor and motor are line-voltage parts for a technician.

Do this now

Turn the AC off at the thermostat

This protects the compressor while you check.

Look, do not touch

Through the top grille, check for sticks or debris jamming the blade. If you must clear something, switch off the outdoor disconnect and the breaker first, and never push the blade by hand to start it.

Reset the breaker once

If the breaker for the unit has tripped, switch it fully off, then on. If it trips again, leave it off: that is a fault for a technician, not something to keep resetting.

Check the thermostat

Confirm the mode (cool or heat), the setpoint (below room temperature for cooling, above for heating), the fan setting and the batteries if it uses them.

What the symptoms point to

Why not give the fan a push?

Online videos show people nudging a stalled fan blade with a stick to start it.

That puts your hand or a stick close to a blade that can start suddenly, inside a cabinet with live line voltage and a charged capacitor.

Even if it works, it only hides a failing capacitor or motor. Leave the system off and have it tested.

What the repair involves

A technician will switch off power, discharge and test the capacitor against its rated value, check the contactor, and test the motor windings and bearings.

Many outdoor units use a dual run capacitor that serves both the fan motor and the compressor, so a single failed part can stop both.

If the motor has failed, it is replaced with one matched for horsepower, speed and rotation, and the blade is reset at the right height. See condenser fan motor replacement for what that job involves.

What drives the price is which part failed and labor. HyreHVAC publishes no prices yet; use the repair cost calculator with your quote.

When to stop and call

Stop at the panel

Do not open the outdoor unit, furnace cabinet or control box. Capacitors can hold a dangerous charge with the power off, and line-voltage work is for a licensed technician.

Burning smell from the outdoor unit

Turn it off at the breaker and call.

Breaker trips again

Leave it off.

Can you prevent it?

Partly. Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear so the motor does not work against a blocked coil, and have the unit checked before the cooling season.

ENERGY STAR’s checklist includes tightening electrical connections, measuring motor voltage and current, and lubricating moving parts where the design calls for it, all contractor tasks.

Capacitors also weaken with heat and age, and a technician can catch a weak one before it fails.

Questions

Why is my AC fan not spinning but the unit is humming?
Most often a failed capacitor or fan motor. Turn the system off and call a technician.
Can I run my AC if the outside fan is not working?
No. The compressor overheats without the fan. Switch it off.
Is it safe to push-start my AC fan?
No. It means reaching near a live, charged cabinet and a blade that can start suddenly.
Can a bad capacitor stop the fan?
Yes, and on a dual capacitor it can stop the compressor too.
How do I know if it is the motor or capacitor?
Only testing tells. A technician measures the capacitor and the motor windings.

Primary-source research, data analysis and fact checking

We are a research desk, not a sales floor. We read the federal microdata file, the statute or the manufacturer data sheet ourselves, and we publish the figure with the document it came from and the date we retrieved it.

Where a number cannot be traced to a primary source, we publish the shorter page and say what we could not verify.

The counts below are generated from the published pages themselves, last counted October 26, 2026, and they are what we have actually published rather than what we intend to.

18
studies published
15
federal sources read and cited
15
studies published with their full dataset as CSV
51
jurisdictions reproduced against EIA’s own tables

How this desk works

  • Primary sources only. Federal data comes from the agency that collects it, in the file that agency publishes. We do not cite an article that cites a source; we download the source and compute the figure ourselves.
  • We validate against the agency before we publish. First, we use each federal microdata file to reproduce the agency’s own published tables. Our cooling research reproduces EIA’s state estimates and standard errors for all 51 jurisdictions. That check caught a variance formula that was off by a factor of four.
  • Every estimate carries its uncertainty. These are survey figures, not counts. Standard errors are computed from the replicate weights the federal file supplies and printed beside the estimate. An estimate too imprecise to publish is reported as such rather than printed.
  • Nothing is typed by hand. Prose, tables and charts all read from one dataset built by script, so a number in a sentence and the same number in the table below it cannot disagree.
  • We publish the data, not just the conclusion. 15 of our 18 studies offer the full computed table as a CSV download on the page, so you can check the analysis or disagree with it. A study without a row-level dataset gets no download link and claims none in its structured data.
  • We correct in public. Where we have published a figure wrongly we fix the figure, rewrite any analysis that rested on it rather than patching the number underneath it, and leave a dated correction note on the page.
  • We do not install or sell HVAC equipment, and we take no payment for placement, ranking or a favorable mention. Nobody buys a position on this site.
